The sounds of war and winter have come to bear upon ten towns. Bryn Shander is under siege by all sides as we rejoin the heroes.
The Speaker immediately asks the heroes to aid them in their darkest moment, to which a loud continuous thud can be heard and felt upon all within the town. They make haste to the north gate to behold the ice witch’s forces trying to break down the gate.
Up and over the heroes go and land in the midst of yeti and bear tribe barbarians. They manage to drive the forces away long enough for the guards inside to re fortify it. Unfortunately, the kender is killed in the exchange but they manage to bring his body inside the safety if the walls. The priestess of Aumanator takes him to her temple and begins the rituals needed to restore his life. Meanwhile, the group spots Helda and two of her brethren being swarmed by orcs from all sides and the rooftops above. Having no time to mourn the loss of Yew, they launch headlong into the fight and take their wrath out upon the orcs. Two score of the beasts lay dead by the end of the fight. Helda, reveals that she’s just received word that the dwarven valley is also under attack at Daledrop. She asks the heroes to help her make it there, but they have not the number needed to survive the trek and offer any aid to the dwarves.
Spotting a defeated group of elk tribe refuges and Hengar among them, Draegan delivers a speech that inspires him and the remaining men able to fight. They join the party as well, and under cover of battle fight their way across the Dale and into the valley. The dwarves, now united have put up a strong defense but are sorely outnumbered. In ride the heroes, dwarves, and elk tribe barbarians to reenforce Stokely’s boys. Hedrun meets the bear tribe leader Günveld upon the field of battle while the heroes take on his two pet winter wolves.
Moving past the largest group of those fighting, they come upon the Ice Witch atop one of the switch backs. She also spots them and calls to them while calling the skeleton of Icingdeath (an ancient white dragon killed a century before by Wulgar and Drizzt). They wade in to meet the threat, and are almost entirely slain by the creature and witch. Fortunately Hengar owes them a life debt and charges in after killing the bear tribe leader. It gives them just enough reprieve to launch a counter attack. The dragon falls and the witch is killed…or so it seemed at first. Her mocking laughter reveals that what they fought was merely a simulacrum of her self. Her voice promises more and more of them as they cannot hope to stop the power of Auril’s Chosen.
They attack on the Dale routed, the heroes rejoin Stokely Silverstream in Battlehammer Hold and discuss what to do next. He’s found out much about the black ice and Baerick Hammerstone ‘s plans of late and informs the heroes that a great ship’s ram was forged from the black ice and sold to the town of Caer-Dineval. The town bought the weapon, but the ship it was placed upon has instead been influenced by the evil ice and has raided the town and taken to piracy. The heroes set out to Caer-Dineval in search of answer the next morning and reach the town midday. The weather has calmed somewhat and all see this as a good sign. They meet the speaker who is enraged that they were swindled into paying for the ram only to become it’s first victims. He offers what he knows, which is scarce information about the fisherman turned pirate Derrick the Drownder.
The heroes take their leave from the speaker’s office and make way to the town’s tavern in search of a ship that is sailing near the lanes the pirates are attacking.
Will the heroes stop the pirate menace? And how will they find the ice witch’s true form and stop her as well? Easthaven is where Vaelish Gant fled to, is this part of another one of his schemes?
